Hosea Ballou (1771-1852)

Born in Rhode Island. Calvinistic Baptist. Brought to Universalism by Caleb Rich. Ministered in Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Published A Treatise on Atonement and An Examination of the Doctrine of Future Retribution (1834). Established The Universalist Magazine in 1819. In 1828 it was absorbed into The Trumpet and Universalist Magazine. Later published The Universalist Expositor. Three sons were Universalist ministers: Hosea Faxon Ballou, Massena Berthier Ballou, and Maturin Murray Ballou.
